Dad's Rockin' Red Lobster BBQ Platter
A Guest Post for our friends over at Babysitter's Search and Mouths of Mums. Find it here.
BabysitterSearch.com.au has partnered with Natasha Wilson from Crafty Little Grey Fox to bring you this handmade father’s day gift idea that you can make with the kids.
Yep, it’s that time of year again. Time to find something that screams “We love you Dad!” in a manly, “dadish” kinda way. Put down the socks and jocks – we think that we’ve found your guy. Ahem…lobster. This is not just any lobster – he’s a Western Rock Lobster, found in the deep blue waters of Western Australia. So he’s perfect for the all-Australian Dad to use as a BBQ platter, a party plate or just a fun display. And he’s so manly. And cute. Just like Daddy…
You'll Need:
-
1 ceramic plate. It doesn’t have to be unglazed, this is optional.
-
Paint in your choice of colours. Again, you don’t need fancy ceramic or glass paint, any water based acrylic paint will work.
-
1 lobster template
-
Scissors
-
Fine paintbrush
-
Pencil
-
Jar of water to wash your brush
-
Old newspaper to prevent spills (optional)
-
Tracing paper
Steps:
1. Print stencil.
2. Position stencil over plate and trace around the image, in pencil. Don’t worry, the pencil marks will come off later!
Mix your paint. I have made a peach colour, by mixing red, white and yellow. Experiment until you get the right colour. Keep in mind that after baking the colour will fade and be a few shades lighter.
3. Paint. Use darker paint first, then add a little more white to the mix and create highlights by painting lines and dabs of paint onto Little Red’s shell. If you make a mistake, simply wipe the paint off with a tissue, or rinse and start again.
4. Bake this plate in the oven at about 160’c or 320’F and cook for about 10 minutes.
5. Allow to cool, before rubbing any pencil marks away with a wet cloth or baby wipe.
Ta-da! One very cool Little Red Lobster. You can now eat off this plate, but remember it is hand wash only!
