DIY Green Lantern Power Ring

"You have the ability to overcome great fear.  Welcome to the corps."

Tadhg's school disco was held last week.  He's come a long way since the days of my shy little boy who barely said boo, but he was still feeling a little apprehensive.  He really, really wanted to go, but wasn't so sure about dancing.  What we needed was a Green Lantern Power Ring.

If you have a son under the age of 14 - or a husband for that matter, chances are you've seen the movie Green Lantern.  If not, and you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, let me give you the run down.  Dark and mysterious forces jeopardize life on earth. Only one man, aided by powerful forces locked inside a ring can save us all from otherwise certain death.

Sounds cool, doesn't it?  And it really makes you want to get your hot little hands on a power ring of your own.  I'm sure that you can probably buy yourself a power ring, just like this one above.  But, why buy what you can make?

You may already have the necessary items to make yourself a power ring lying around the house.  (Since Mr. J. is still a little suspicious over the diminishing stock levels of his Man Cave, we had to buy ours.  We didn't mind - it meant an outing to our favourite store, Bunnings.)

You'll Need:

A picture tells a thousand words.  We bought a packet of stretchy rubber things, a hose fitting and some nutty/ bolty bits.  Sorry, but I'm crafty. Not handy.  And yes - there's a big difference.  So buy these things below, or something like them.

You will also need superglue (adults to handle only).

Steps:

1.  Take your hose fitting

and apply glue to the centre line

2.  Attach your stretchy rubber ring and press until firmly stuck

3. Leave to dry for another five or ten minutes to be certain

Pick it up gently and if it is stuck firmly, you're ready to continue

4.  Take your nut/ bolt but and place over the top, making sure that it fits correctly.  If you have any sharp, pointy bits protruding like mine, snip the top off with scissors

5.  Apply glue

and again, allow to dry.  We painted some super hero action shots while we were waiting.

Once dry, your ring is complete.  You are now free to go ahead and save the universe from peril.  Or to dance wildly at a school disco and win a prize, like my fearless little break dancer did!

Yes, you really can do anything with a bit of encouragement.  Green Lantern is a pretty cool movie, as far as action thrillers go.

For some other great Green Lantern crafts, you could try this how-to by the Instructables.  Here's another version How to Make a Green Lantern Power Battery that looks very cool!  This page has lots of colouring in activities for Green Lantern fans.
