Reindeer Grass Heads

These adorable grass heads are quick and easy to make.  The grass "hair" will grow in a matter of days!

You'll Need: (per reindeer)

  • 1/3 sheet of dark brown felt

  • 1/4 sheet of light brown felt

  • 1/4 sheet of pink felt

  • small amount of red felt

  • 1 pair googly eyes

  • scissors

  • strong craft glue

  • strip of christmas paper about 15 cm long

  • 1 sticker

  • 2 pipe cleaners

  • plastic cup

  • handful grass seeds

  • 1 stocking

  • 1 packet cotton wool

Steps:

1. Take your stocking and cut the foot end at about the mid-calf mark.

2.  Spoon 1 tablespoon of grass seeds into the end, then stuff with cotton wool.  Don't be tempted to put too many grass seeds into the stocking but be generous with the cotton wool.  You will need about 1/4 packet so that your stocking resembles a large potato.  Tie a knot at the end to hold in place.  Set aside.

3.  Take your dark brown felt and cut out an oval shape for the head.  Next take your light brown felt and cut out ears.  Cut smaller ear inserts from the pink felt, so that they fit inside the light brown ears you have just made.  Finally, cut out a red nose about the size of a 10c piece.  Glue the face together.

4. Next, glue on the googly eyes.

5. Take your pipe cleaners and cut about 3/4s long.  Twist the smaller piece around the top to make the antlers. Sticky tape these antlers to the front of your plastic cup.

6.  Fill your plastic cup with a small amount of water.  You will only need about 50 mls.  Place your grass head stocking inside the cup, knot end down so that the grass seeds are on top.

7. Finally, leave your Reindeer in a slightly sunny spot (not too hot) to grow.  After a few days, you should have a gorgeous reindeer with a full head of hair!

Note: You may need to use staples if your glue isn't strong enough to stick the felt to the plastic cup.

This website from Seattle Travel Mom has lots of fun Reindeer and Christmas crafts, including a link to Betty Crocker's recipe for Reindeer food.  We definitely need to make some Reindeer food this year!  I thought this recipe here for Magic Reindeer Food was better suited to Australian pantries, however, with ingredients you'll be able to find readily.  Plus, as a bonus, it also has a cute Reindeer food label to print out.
