Vanilla and Sandlewood Milk Bath for Mum

Kissing away cuts and scratches, hunting for rogue socks in the laundry pile and

cutting sandwiches into something resembling a dinosaur are all part and parcel of

motherhood.   These gorgeous days of delectable, fat little fingers and toes won't last forever,

and we savour every moment.  But on the one day of the year when mums the world over

get to (fingers crossed) sleep in, we want to forget the laundry pile and languish in a

tub instead!

Perhaps because when you slip under just far enough to get your ears wet, the whole world -

dirty laundry and all, drifts away into muffled oblivion...When your day calls for all out

poofy pampering, this is the answer. A luxurious, skin softening milk bath.

And the best part?  If you can make a sand castle, you can make this gorgeous gift for

mum, with a little help from dad or Gran, of course!

Here's how:

You will need:

  • 1 vanilla pod

  • 50g (1 3/4 oz) powdered goats' milk

  • 100g (3 1/2 oz) bicarb soda (sodium bicarbonate)

  • 20 drops of Sandlewood essential oil (optional)

  • 10g cocoa butter

  • handful of dried flowers, such as rose or lavender (optional)

Utensils:

  • small mixing bowl

  • metal spoon

  • cheese grater

  • airtight 350ml jar (1 1/2 cup)

Notes:

  • This recipe will fill a 350g jar (12 fl oz).

  • You can buy powdered goats' milk in some grocery stores, health food shops and online.

  • You don't need to add essential oils to this recipe as the milk alone will moisturise and soften your skin. But the essential oils do add a beautiful, musky aroma. Sandlewood is known for its antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties, so your whole body will feel relaxed after a long soak.

Steps:

1. Pour your goats' milk powder and bicarb soda into the mixing bowl.

2.  Using a sharp knife gently score along your vanilla pod and add to the mix.  (This is the step where little hands will need some help)

3. Add sandlewood essential oil if using. Mix thoroughly.

4. Grate cocoa butter into the bowl, stirring gently. Try to avoid handling the cocoa butter, as it easily melts in your hands. Instead, use your spoon or a clean paintbrush to brush off any flakes

5. Stir through most of the dried flowers. Spoon mix into the jar, before pouring the remaining flowers on top for decoration.

The flowers can be added to the water, but are more for decoration and aroma, so don't add too many to your bath.

6. Finally, if this is intended as a gift for mum, tie a pretty ribbon and gift tag around your jar. Otherwise, ladel a heaped spoonful into a warm bath and soak away!
