This homemade chalkboard is a fun way to create a message board for a child's bedroom.
Taxi Cab Chalkboard
When my son was first learning how to write, he was very self-conscious. He was a little shy back then and would do just about anything to avoid sitting down to write the alphabet in front of me.
I decided to try something a little different, and made this taxi cab chalkboard so that we could write messages to each other. I hung it up in his bedroom. Every night, after his teeth were brushed and PJs were on, I would leave him alone to choose which letters he wanted to practice - usually while I did the washing up. I'd come in and we would read it together before choosing our story for the evening. Then, later while he slept, I would write a short message - just one or two words for him to wake up to in the morning.
We made ours using store bought chalkboard paint, but it's very easy to make. If you'd like the recipe to make your own,
click here. Here's how we made our Taxi Cab Chalkboard:
You'll Need:
-
1 piece of plywood - we picked up a sheet of plywood from Bunnings for a couple of dollars, but you may have something similar laying around the house that you could use
-
chalkboard paint in your choice of colours
-
paintbrushes - one large and thick for the background and one finer for the more intricate parts
-
pencil
-

Steps:
1. Take your plywood, or chosen board, and draw your mural in pencil. Remember that this doesn't have to be a masterpiece. Once you begin painting, it will take on a whole new look
2. Once you are happy with the penciled drawing, paint with your chalkboard paints
3. Leave overnight to dry.
4. Once dry, smooth over with your sandpaper.
5. Slate before using for the first time. "Slate" means to completely colour in with chalk and then wipe off again.
That's it. It really is that easy! Enjoy your drawings!
